AQUA FITNESS

Hello everyone,

Aqua fitness is referred to as water aerobics, where exercises are done in swimming pool in a vertical position in shallow (chest level) or deep water. In this blog, I would like to share my experience in participating in aqua-fit classes during my placement. Initially, I was not confident to go into the pool since I don't know swimming, but it just took few minutes for me to be comfortable in water to perform the exercises.

I had a great chance of participating in three aqua-fit classes that were conducted by three different instructors. I was able to learn and experience their different styles of approach in conducting the program. The buoyancy of water helps us to perform exercises with less impact on the joints, but the resistance provided by water is much higher and this made the exercises to be more challenging to the muscles. The resistance that we encounter throughout the session, helps to provide a balanced workout since the muscles usually work in pairs.

During aqua-fit class, I was able to feel that the cooling effect of water helped the body to prevent overheating during exercises and experienced a reduced heart rate when compared to that of a similar program on land. Aqua-fit program appeared to be most popular among senior citizens at the Allandale recreation center and after talking to them, I was also able to discover that most of them were participating in these programs continuously for more than 12 years.

It was a great experience and I enjoyed a lot in aqua-fit classes and this was one of my favorite programs during placement. Hope you find this blog motivating to participate in aqua-fit programs.  Let me know your favorite placement experiences in comments.

  1. Hi Shobhitha, it is good to know that you are having an amazing experience in your placement and after knowing about aqua-fit classes I am also eager to participate in them and it seems very enjoyable. It is totally a new experience for everyone who did not participate yet in these classes and I am very excited about this and nervous too as you said it a challenging task as the muscle works in pairs so it make the exercise hard. Honestly saying I also do not know swimming about I want to participate in these classes. As you mentioned it is good for reducing heart rate. And I want to join these classes as I like to experience new and difficult things in life. It is challenging to for some people as they are not comfortable in water. I am shocked too by knowing that the senior performed it as in water there is resistance while performing exercise and the seniors will need more energy to overcome that resistance as the joints get weak in their age.

  2. Hello Shobhitha, the way you have described everything about the aqua-fit classes is motivating enough to go attend the class. First of all, I found your blog post to be very beneficial as people including me are usually not so much aware about the benefits of aqua-fit classes. Moreover, there are very few percent of people that choose doing work out in water rather than gym. After reading the positive aspects of the exercise in water I am amazed by them. You have mentioned that bouyancy of water reduces the impact on the joints. From this I have learnt that water aerobics could be my choice of workout for my geriatric clients with lower limb problems or pregnant ladies. As u have said, it gives cool down effect so this can encourage people to get to exercise without being sweaty in summers. Thank you for sharing such a great experience with us. I found your blog post to be very informative.
