CIRCUIT TRAINING

Hello everyone,

Circuit training is a form of workout which involves different muscle groups through several exercises usually ranging from five to ten with a short rest period in between. As mentioned before in my third blog, I had the opportunity to participate in body 360 and the athletic training program at the Recreation Centre. These two programs were in the form of circuit training workouts.

By participating in these programs, I learned about the strategies involved in designing this form of workout. The number of stations set up was based on the time of the program and the number of participants involved. We usually had four to five stations and the candidates were split into groups of three according to the stations. To set up an effective circuit workout we need to consider the following approaches:

  • Select the time limit (usually ranges from 30 mins to one hour).
  • Select an upper body exercise (bent-over row, push-up, and shoulder press).
  • Select a lower body exercise (deadlift, back squat and forward lunge).
  • Select a core exercise (plank and abdominal crunches).
  • Select a compound exercise (bench hop-over and jumping lunge).
  • Select a sprint (jumping rope, rowing and cycling).
The exercises are done for a minute in each station and then it is followed by a 1-minute rest period. We should design a different set of exercises for the next round. At the beginning of my placement, I found this form of workout very hard for me since I was a beginner, but towards the end, I was able to feel the improvement in my body capacity. I learned the importance of providing options for all the exercises (regression and progression) so that it will be easy for the participants to select their comfortable form to perform the workout.

I found circuit training as one of the best forms for body conditioning, muscular endurance, resistance training, and weight loss. I was also able to lose some weight after regular circuit training workout and looking forward to continuing this to improve my physical fitness. Hope you find my experiences helpful to learn more about circuit training.

  1. Hi Shobhitha,

I was very excited to read your blog after looking into the title saying circuit training. Circuit training is one among my favorite workouts. I also participated in few circuit training classes and felt it as the most challenge workouts, but working in groups is always fun and encourages us to do our best. The best part I felt about circuit training was switching the stations, since we wont be bored doing the same exercise. When it comes to design an effective circuit class its often challenging since we have to take into consideration your above mentioned approaches. I felt time limitation is the important factor of consideration since we need to split the time allotted to each station, time to switch from one station to another and rest time. I also noticed some amount of weight loss with this work out which was motivating.
